The Kirkwood Public Library understands the essential role that technology plays in our modern society.  That is why we have made it our goal to provide technological services to our community that are necessary, useful and fun.  Along with providing these tools, we support our community in their implementation of technology inside the library and out, through the assistance of our knowledgable staff, the computer classes and Drop-In IT Help sessions we offer.

Technology Lab

Computers - PCs / The Technology Lab has eight PCs running Windows 7. 
  • Microsoft Office 2013 - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher
  • Windows Movie Maker - video editing software
  • Audacity - sound editing software
  • Internet access
  • Flatbed scanner capable of scanning documents, photographs and negatives
  • One computer with access to Adobe Creative Cloud - Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc...
  • Three computers have Adobe Acrobat

Computers - Macs / The Technology Lab also has four 2013 iMac computers.  

  • iMovie - video editing software
  • Garage Band - sound editing software
  • One Mac with access to Adobe Creative Suite 6 - Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc...
  • Webcams
  • Two Macs have Adobe Acrobat

Large Format Printer

  • Prints to standard, heavyweight and glossy paper up to 36 inches wide
  • Printing fees: $2.50 per foot for standard paper & $4.00 per foot for all other paper types
  • Inquire with Information Services staff to print

Projector / The Technology Lab projector is a model Epson PowerLite 1776W.

  • Can connect wirelessly to a laptop computer
  • Allows for ease of use and mobility for teaching computer classes

OSCAR / This is a combination of OSCAR Interactive Column and Epson BrightLink 485Wi projector.

  • The screen projects onto a table top which can then be manipulated using two special pens
  • Allows for greater collaboration with groups and technology classes held by the library

VHS-to-DVD Converter / There are two VHS-to-DVD Converters in the Technology Lab, attached to the iMac computers. 

  • Perform a straight conversion from VHS to DVD using our Toshiba VHS/DVD player combo or uplaod your VHS to one of our Mac computers and use iMovie to crop and edit your old home movies.
  • Only non-copyrighted materials may be converted
  • The process may take up to a few hours, depending on the length of the VHS tape

Patrons desiring to use this service should seek the assistance of library staff and bring their own DVD-R (writable DVD). 


DVD Duplicator

  • This device can be used to duplicate non-copyrighted DVDs

Public Computers & Internet Access


Public Computers / All public computers have:

  • Microsoft Office 2013 - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher
  • Internet access

Patrons holding valid library cards are allotted 150 minutes per day.


Printing / Patrons may print from any of the library's PCs. 

  • Black & white printing - $0.15/page
  • Color printing - $1.00/page

Mobile Printing / Print to the library powered by PrinterOn*

* Standard printing rates apply.


WiFi / The library offers free wireless internet access throughout the building. 

  • Username & passwords available at the Circulation and Youth Services Desks

Technology for Children


Public Computers / The public computers in the Children's Room feature:

  • Internet access
  • A document scanner is available in the Children's Room
  • Shorter tables for ease of use by youngsters

Patrons holding valid library cards are allotted 100 minutes per day.


AWE Early Literacy Station / These fun and educational computers are designed specifically for young children.

  • Loaded with a wide variety of educational programs covering all areas of curriculum
  • No internet connection makes them safe for children
  • Touch screen monitors and color coded keyboards for ease of use
iPad Crayon Kiosk / This fun and educational kiosk holds four iPads and is designed specifically for young children.
  • Loaded with a wide variety of educational programs covering all areas of curriculum
  • No internet connection makes them safe for children

Technology for Teens


Teen Computers / The Teen Room has three PCs.

  • One powerful Alienware PCs and two PCs with extra RAM and large monitors
  • A wide variety of games, including Minecraft.

Video Games / In addition to the teen computers, the Teen Room also features a Nintendo Wii U & XBox 360. 

  • Games and controllers can be checked out for use
  • Variety of games, including Super Smash Bros. Brawl, New Super Mario Bros. U and Portal 2!
  • Large screen television and comforable furniture for gameplay

eReaders & Tablets

eReaders / The library offers a variety of eReaders available for checkout including a Kindle Fire, 2 Kindle Touch devices, a Nook Color and Nook Simple Touch. They circulate for 3 weeks, and are not eligible for renewals. Devices may be requested by any patron holding a valid card to any library in the Municipal Library Consortium, however the devices must be picked up and returned at Kirkwood Public Library.  Late fines for eReaders are $5.00 per day.

  • Kindle Fire has 80 Books, 9 Games and is not OverDrive accessible
  • Kindle Touch devices have 65-66 Books and are OverDrive accessible
  • Nook Color has 24 Books and is not OverDrive accessible
  • Nook Simle Touch has 15 books and is not OverDrive accessible

Tablets / The library has 7 tablets that can be checked out for use in the library. These tablets are indended for training purposes and to give users some experience with a device prior to making a purchase decision. Tablets include:

  • Microsoft Surface RT
  • iPad Mini
  • Kindle Fire HD
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 4
  • Nook HD
  • Kindle Paperwhite
  • Sony Ultra-Slim Reader

Meeting Room Technology

Projection System / The library meeting room has a ceiling-mounted projector and sound system. 

  • Wall ports allow for easy connection to laptop computers and other devices
  • Groups using the meeting room may utilize the projector with their own equipment

Video Conferences / The library maintains video conference equipment.

  • May be used by groups who have reserved the Meeting Room

Scan / Copy / Fax

Simple Scan Station / The Simple Scan Station can scan large and small documents and images through a document or flatbed scanner. 

  • Images can be cropped and resized
  • Images can be sent to Google Docs, an email address, a Microsoft Office Document* or stored on a USB Drive
  • Images can also be faxed (see Fax Machine, below, for prices)

*Documents scanned to MS Word are converted, allowing them to be edited, providing that the conversion was able to recognize the characters.


Copy Machine /

  • Black & white copies are $0.15/copy
  • Both letter and legal-sized copies can be made

Fax Machine / While the Simple Scan Station allows patrons to fax documents themselves, the staff may also fax documents for patrons.  Fax services (for both Simple Scan and staff-made faxes) cost:

  • $1.00/page for local
  • $2.00/first page, $1.00/each additional page for long distance
  • $5.00/first page, $3.00/each additional page for international
  • $1.00/page to receive faxes
